- Gilles PEterson
- The Black Madonna
It is an enormous pleasure to welcome The Black Madonna as our next thirteen week resident, presenting We Still Believe every Friday in April, May and June.
The Black Madonna’s last two guests of her XOYO residency series could be none other than Gilles Peterson and HAAi.
If it’s eclecticism you crave, the Gilles Peterson is your man. He has made it his mission to chronicle the obscure and wonderful music that is produced all over the world, from the cultural centers and out towards the lesser known places further afield. His finds his musical interests rooted deep in the funk, soul and jazz of the pirate radios of the 70s and 80s, which he would later become associated with. Nowadays Gilles showcases his discoveries on his weekly Radio 1 ‘Worldwide’ show which is broadcast worldwide, and he brings his near four-decade love and experience of music to his DJ sets that are truly one of a kind.
Phonox’s Saturday night resident HAAi started collecting her records in mostly African and Turkish styles. She would later discover European dance music and all the nuances that go with it, which in combination with her original record taste produces DJ sets of spectacular quality. As well as her selecting and crowd-reading abilities, her mixing is flawless to the point of perfection. The recent years have seen her work tirelessly at both honing her craft and combining her musical influences which secured her the residency she held at Ridley Road Market Bar. She continues to surprise and impress every Saturday at Phonox, and we can’t wait for her to take a trip north of the river and show us what the buzz at the Brixton club has been all about.
