A singer, songwriter and classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Alexander Kotz, otherwise known as Elderbrook, developed his love for music at an early age. Building his musical foundations upon the influences of Jazz artists Sam Cooke and Billie Holiday, Londoner Kotz would fuse his distinctive vocals with his extensive knowledge of guitar, bass, piano, and drums.
Whilst studying in the British town of Bath, Kotz began experimenting with his sound, merging his acoustic and classical knowledge with film samples, trip-hop elements and electronic-infused productions to hone a signature style. Says Kotz of his creative process, “I started creating hip-hop beats and singing over them until it evolved into more of an electronic sound. I keep it minimal – when a song is broken down it leaves more room for intricacies which can be fun.”
Now at just 22 years old, Elderbrook has cemented his status as an artist to watch. 2015 saw the release of his debut EP Simmer Down on acclaimed label Black Butter. First track ‘Could’ has been streamed over 3.5 million times on Spotify, whilst his follow up Travel Slow hit #1 on HypeMachine. Kotz also collaborated with respected German production duo Andhim on How Many Times. Not only did the release receive heavy praise from Annie Mac and Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1, but Mixmag also picked it out as one of their Top Tracks of 2015 after it became one of Ibiza’s most Shazam’d tracks of the summer. Follow-up single ‘Closer’ was also received extremely well, with huge remixes coming from Eats Everything, Siege and George Kwali.
After accompanying trio RÜFÜS DÜ SOL on their European BLOOM Tour this past spring, Elderbrook closed out the year on the road, joining Hayden James of Future Classic on his North American run of dates, as well as European appearances with Gorgon City for their Kingdom tour which included a date at The Warehouse Project. He also played a sold -out headline show at London’s much-hyped new venue Omeara in October this year.
Most recently, Elderbrook released his official remix of Clean Bandit’s no.1 hit single ‘Rockabye’ ft. Sean Paul and Anne-Marie. 2017 looks set to continue his successful trajectory, with a brand new EP project due early next year as well as a headline show in London at XOYO in March.
